The basic definition of a reclining chair requires two elements. First the footrest must raise and extend the logs of the occupant. Second, the backrest must tilt down. The effect is that the occupant assumes a much more horizontal position. The reclining chair allows both the regular seated position and the recumbent one.

In the mid nineteenth century, the French introduced a camping chair that could be altered into a bed. Originally these chairs were made of steel. But before the 20th century wooden models were available. The first American patent on a wooden reclining chair went to gentlemen named Shoemaker and Knabush. This patent was granted in 1928. The two men went on to create the La-Z-Boy company. Two years later they were adding upholstering and padding to their chairs.

But the modern recliner was developed by a man named Caldemeyer. He was greatly influenced by the time he spent in the Air Force. Both the Apollo and Mercury astronauts used chairs based on his designs. In fact, the NASA mission control also used these chairs. President LBJ famously used Caldemeyer chairs. Today one with the presidental seal is on display at the Smithsonian. For these reasons, this was the first recliner to gain widespread accceptance among the American public.

There a few things you must consider when buying a reclining chair. The science of ergonomics seeks to describe the best physical positioning of the human body for both comfort and functionality. You will want a chair that has an ergonomic design. The first thing to look for is a backrest and a footrest that may be moved individually. This gives the chair the greatest flexibility. Also, both rests should have multiple positions they can be placed in. The chair should maintain a proper balance in each of these positions.
